Viv James – from Fireglow to the Igloo Choir…

Viv James joined Igloo shortly before retirement. We take great pleasure in keeping her busy with rehearsals, training and gigs! She is a member of the Igloo Choir and has occasional personal vocal coaching…

 Folk Nights..

“I have always loved to sing and have been teaching myself basic guitar. At one Youth Club/Folk night, I was fiddling with a friend’s guitar and the leader came along and said “right you can sing that in a minute!” Which I did, albeit very nervously!!!
Then, for a while, I sang as part of a duo.  We were called Fireglow and sang at folk clubs in the Havant area and at the old Centre Hotel in Portsmouth.
Since then, as a teacher,  I sang every day in class with the children, making up songs to motivate learning!!! Having stopped work, there was suddenly a gap – I had no obvious reason to sing until I found a note on the back of a car park ticket at The Spring in Havant which said ‘If you love to sing phone this number.’ That number connected me to Di Elle and the rest is history!! I love being part of the choir, they are all great people and Di Elle is an inspiration.

Songwriting…

It has been fabulous learning to contribute to writing songs within the group and working with adults rather than the school children I was used to!
The monthly jams are great fun and give me a chance to perform to, and with, friends. I feel able to try new things out without fear. There is also a Folk Club once a month when my diary allows me to get there!!! The chance to record an EP at River Studios was an amazing experience and I look forward to new songs and performances!”

 The Igloo Showcase…

Viv sang solo for the first time in the Igloo Annual Showcase “Guilty Pleasures” in March 2014. Her choice was ‘Another Day In Paradise’ by Phil Collins, and she also performed with The Igloo Choir. She often says ‘I wish I’d found you years ago!’ but we’re thrilled to have you with s now Viv!
